Brisbane is fastest-warming city

BRISBANE is warming up faster than any other Australian capital city according to a league table charting the effect of climate change across the nation.

The average temperature figures for 22 major towns and cities show all but one – Albany in Western Australia – have warmed up since 1991.

Of the country’s capital cities, Brisbane’s temperature increased the most. Its 16-year average of 19.36C was almost half a degree warmer than between 1961 and 1990.

The figures, verified by the Bureau of Meteorology, are taken from the average temperatures recorded by the national climate centre. As they are annual averages, they are a reliable indicator that temperatures are consistently rising around the country.

Overall, the average national temperature is one-third of a degree higher than what it was in the 29 years between 1961 and 1990.

Alice Springs had by far the greatest rise: it was, on average, more than three-quarters of a degree hotter between 1991 and 2006 compared to the previous three decades. Cobar's annual average temperature increased by almost the same amount.
